PAN / Aadhaar Format Validator

PAN structure per s.139A IT Act 1961 [s.262 IT Act 2025] · Aadhaar Verhoeff checksum — 100% offline, nothing is transmitted

Structural Validation
This checks structure and checksum only — it does not confirm the number is issued or active. Verify PAN on the e-filing portal and Aadhaar on the UIDAI portal. No data leaves this page.

About This Tool

The PAN & Aadhaar Validator checks the structural validity of a PAN (Permanent Account Number) or Aadhaar number offline. A valid PAN follows the pattern AAAAA9999A — 5 letters, 4 digits, 1 letter — where the 4th letter encodes the taxpayer type (P=Individual, C=Company, H=HUF, F=Firm, T=Trust, etc.). A valid Aadhaar must be a 12-digit number starting with 2–9, passing the Verhoeff checksum algorithm. No data is transmitted — the validation is entirely in your browser.

How to Use

  1. Select whether you are validating a PAN or Aadhaar.
  2. Enter the PAN (e.g. ABCPD1234E) or Aadhaar number (12 digits).
  3. Click Validate.
  4. The tool checks format, entity type (PAN), and Verhoeff checksum (Aadhaar).
  5. A green result means structurally valid; red means a format error or checksum mismatch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 4th letter of PAN indicate?

P=Individual, C=Company, H=HUF, F=Firm/LLP, A=AOP, T=Trust, B=BOI, L=Local Authority, J=Artificial Juridical Person, G=Government.

Does this confirm my PAN is active?

No. This only checks structure. To verify if a PAN is active/valid in the IT database, use the PAN verification service on the Income Tax e-Filing portal (incometax.gov.in).

What is the Verhoeff checksum?

Verhoeff algorithm uses permutation tables to compute a check digit that catches all single-digit errors and adjacent transpositions — making it more reliable than simple modulo arithmetic.

Is PAN-Aadhaar linking mandatory?

Yes. PAN-Aadhaar linking is mandatory for all individuals (with limited exceptions). PANs not linked to Aadhaar became inoperative from July 2023, preventing ITR filing and TDS credit.
